Abstract:
After the Boxer Rebellion China is forced to sign a humiliating treaty in 1901. Disgusted by the ruling Qing (Chʻing) Dynasty, Qiu Jin develops revolutionary sentiments. Coming into conflict with the political conservatism and male chauvinism of her husband, Qiu Jin joins the Chinese exile community in Japan. Though she misses her children, taken by her husband's family, Qiu Jin devotes her life to the cause of revolution. Returning to China, she helps plan an insurrection. The uprising fails and Qiu Jin is executed.
